Kenya Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program

The Kenya Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (Kenya FELTP) was established in 2004 to strengthen the epidemiology and laboratory management capacity of Kenya to meet the challenges of emerging infectious diseases and other public health problems.

Kenya FELTP offers two full-time Master’s Degree courses leading to a Master of Science in Applied Epidemiology and a Master of Science in Laboratory Management and Epidemiology.

This program was the first FELTP to offer the laboratory management track in Africa, in addition to the established applied epidemiology curriculum as part of its degree program. The Kenya FELTP is a regional program admitting trainees from Kenya, Sudan and Tanzania. It has had 171 graduates and current residents who have backgrounds in medicine, Nutrition among others.

The program works closely with the Ministry of Health in undertaking outbreak investigations, training in needs assessment, as well as conducting short training courses tailored to the needs of the Ministry. The program has taken the lead in investigating and responding to cholera and H1N1 influenza outbreaks in the country. Kenya FELTP is funded by the Ellison Foundation through the CDC Foundation
